Making Waves with a Marine Career, Walt Disney World® Resort

Get a behind-the-scenes look at a variety of marine careers. Students will discover the exciting world of marine mammal training, water sciences, aquarium and animal care, aquatic research, and conservation education.

Description

The mission of this learning program is to enhance students' awareness and knowledge of career opportunities in the marine science field, while showcasing skills needed for a career in the marine profession. Through observations, hands-on activities and discussions with The Seas with Nemo & Friends staff, students learn how to use their skills to "make a splash" in this fascinating career track.

Key Learning Points
Marine Mammal Trainer
Students learn about the challenges and rewards of working with marine animals.
  • Learn the animal training process.
  • Students come to understand the scope of day-to-day responsibilities of marine mammal trainers, including food preparation, training, husbandry and marine mammal rehabilitation.
  • Understand the educational background and experience needed to work with these fascinating animals.

Marine Researcher
Students come to know the important role that research plays in any marine facility.
  • Learn how research helps manage and protect marine species.
  • Learn about the different research projects currently taking place at The Seas with Nemo & Friends.
  • Participate in an observational research activity.

Water Sciences
Students understand the role chemistry plays in marine life management.
  • Students visit The Seas with Nemo & Friends Water Science facility and learn about the integral role that water quality plays in the health of marine animals.

Aquarist
Students discover that the role of the aquarist is truly diverse.
  • Students come to understand the scope of day-to-day responsibilities for the aquarist, including feeding fish, observing behavior, monitoring health and rehabilitating endangered species.
  • Understand the educational background and experience needed to work in an aquarium setting.

Veterinarian
Marine Veterinary science is a rapidly expanding field. Each day, we learn new innovative methods to care for marine life, and students learn about some of these new methods including the new types of surgery that can now be performed on fish.
  • Students also learn about the vital role veterinarians play in the care and health of our animals.
  • Participate in a hands-on veterinary based activity.

The Wrap-Up
  • Students discover how education plays a vital role in the marine conservation field.
